Social Effects of Poverty
Poverty is a state of lacking essential needs such as better health facilities, developed infrastructure, clothing and quality education. Insufficient income and lack of material possession have been a major challenge in both developing and developed nations. Despite concerted efforts to alleviate poverty globally, a good number of US citizens still face poverty as a socio-economic problem. The consistency of scarceness of resources across geographical areas in the US requires a deep sociological study that delves into the History of the United States Economy (Chaudry et al., 2018). On the other hand, the Federal Government applies measures such as poverty threshold and poverty guidelines to quantify the aspect of the poverty level and its sociological effects on the US economy.
The 2020 Census assessment stipulates that 11.1% of the American people are living with poverty, after a long stable economy that the country has enjoyed. With the current pandemic surging on, this trend is expected to increase rapidly (Tickamyer et al., 2017). Sociologist argues that quality education correlates with better earnings which positively impacts on the poverty elimination policies in the US (Tickamyer et al., .2017). With improved quality of education among the US citizens, the level of economic growth has continued to improve, which is evidence of the stable economy. The sociologist has developed structural functionalism theory to debate upon the poverty condition of the United States. In theory, it is argued that the best-qualified individuals stand a better chance of job opportunities. It is a manifestation of capitalism in which the rich and high social class continues to widen the gap between the poor and the rich (Chaudry et al., 2018). Structural functionalism, therefore, is a theory that advances the inequality among the people of the US. As witnessed in the education sector, most families that are considered well to send their children to better kindergarten schools. The students who attend these better educational facilities stand a chance not only performing better but also completing all their levels of learning.
