Self-talk and Emotional Intelligence
We all speak to ourselves either loudly or through internal commentary on daily bases, about the future or the past as we make decisions, solve problems and confront obstacles. This speaking is what entails self-talk, and it can be said to be the building block of emotional intelligence as it encompasses of the means of enhancing self-awareness and self-regulation, both of which are integral parts of EI (Depape et al., 2016). In other words, self-talk influences our emotions and moods.
The past three weeks have been tough for everyone, or at least most of the people across the world I included. With the Corona pandemic disorienting our normal lifestyle and sensitization of physical isolation going on, spending time alone has become the new normal. Amidst the uncertainty, anxiety and worry, I have found myself having a lot of self-talks, ranging from positive, negative and kind. As self-quarantine started, most of my self-talks were negative, mostly attributed by fear and feeling unhelpful in the situation. However, with time they have shifted to being kind and positive understanding that everyone is doing the best that they can, I included.
