The Cold war started in 1947 between the world’s most superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union after the Second World War came to an end. The rivalry between the two countries was caused by differences in political ideologies and economic developments.
The Soviet Union became allies of the western democracies after the Nazi aggression against the Soviet Union in 1941.However, post world ward wrangles for world dominance between the US and the USSR saw each faction build its own territories of influence thus developing the world into two opposing camps, the communist and capitalists. In Europe for example, the Soviet Union took control of the Eastern Europe. Also, the USSR control half of the capital of Germany, Barlin.On the other hand, The United States, France, Western Germany and Britain took control of the Western Europe. The USSR blocked Railroads and roads that led to Western Berlin thus forcing the US and Britain to airlift supplies to west Barlin (Fink, 2013).
After the end of the WWII, Korea divided into two, the South and the North. Nonetheless, the Northern Korea adopted communist ideologies while the south became capitalists. North Korea which was an ally of the USSR invaded the south. The US with the help of the United Nations sent troops to help South Korea. The condition escalated the tension between the US and the USSR. However, the war ended in 1953 with neither side winning the war.
The tension between the United States and the USSR saw the US skip the 1980 world Olympic championships that were held in Mocow.On the other hand, Moscow also boycotted the corresponding 1984 championships that were held in Los Angelos (Prados, 2011).
The incursion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union with an effort to prop a communist state angered the US, a fact that worsened the relationship between the two powerful states. The attack made President Ronald Reagan of the US to declare the USSR as an evil empire (Prados, 2011).The US embarked on the Containment strategies to counteract the influence of the USSR in the world by increasing expenditure on ammunition.
The political restructuring and the Economic downturn of the Soviet Union in the 1980s became apparent .When President Mikhail Gorbachev took office in 1985. The Soviet Union was in a worst economic crisis. Nonetheless, Satellite countries to the Soviet Union started to dissociate from the Communists ideologies of the USSR and started to embrace the Capitalistic ideas which were seemed to be more progressive (Fink,2013).
President Garbachev abandoned the nine-year war in Afghanistan by the USSR. Besides, he refused to offer military assistance to former USSR satellite countries, hence weakening the communist empire. The visit of the Gorbachev to the E...
