Is it Ethical for Leaders to Lie if it will Benefit the Team? (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

This week's lesson discussed some common successful leader qualities and their ethical implications. Consider and comment on the following questions:
1. Consider the quandary of honesty, and that although it is generally a morally sound quality for leaders, at times it might do more harm than good. Your lesson this week discusses some scenarios of this kind. Other examples might include: Should your doctor lie to you about a life-threatening diagnosis if he or she knows that your awareness of the condition would likely bring about anxiety and depression that would almost certainly make recovery far less likely? Is the government justified in lying to us about its espionage efforts, or about overseas military operations, if the aim is to keep us safe and if publicizing them would undermine these efforts? These are complicated questions; here is a great article on the subject of ethics and honesty. After you've read the article and given this some thought, discuss whether you think it is ever ethical for a leader to lie if the intent and/or the result is to benefit the team as a whole. Why or why not? The article is located at

2. Re-read the quote from Secretary of State Colin Powell in this week's lesson. Do you agree with Powell that good leaders should "share the credit" but "take the blame"? Why or why not?

Ethical Leaders
Student’s Name
Institutional Affiliation
Lying has always been seen as a peril to the society especially if it concerns leaders. However, there are some circumstances in which it seems the most subliminally moral option left. In such cases lying may be tolerated because it is better to tell a lie than have a person worry unnecessarily, lose momentum or become sad. Therefore it is ethical for leaders to lie for the greater good of the team as a whole (Shapiro, 2016).
