This paper provides an analysis of the book 'My Bloody Life: The Making of a Latin King' by examining the family and community issues that influenced the life and choices of Raymundo as a young youth from a minority community. The dysfunctional family characterized by physical and sexual abuse, neglect, and failed relationships failed to provide Raymundo with the support and love he needed, and thus he joined the Latin gangs where there was a sense of belonging and value. The paper also addresses community issues such as the availability of drugs and firearms and lawlessness, which empowered and financed gang activities. Finally, it accesses how the wider society contributes to the community's marginalization through systematic racism and failed institutions. The social and economic justice institutions analyzed here include schools, courts, and the police.
