Prof. Harald Hauptmann (1936-2018) taught prehistory and Near Eastern archaeology at Heidelberg University and served as the German Archaeological Institute's director of Istanbul's Istanbul Department (1994-2006). Archaeological digs in eastern and southern Turkey from the Early Neolithic to the Medieval Era were carried out by him over his long career. Until his death in 2014, Klaus Schmidt was a well-known archaeologist and prehistorian in Germany. He attended the universities of Erlangen and Heidelberg to study pre- and protohistory, classical archaeology, and geology. Twenty years of Klaus Schmidt's life were devoted to Göbekli Tepe's excavation and investigation.
