Most Hollywood films are deliberately targeted at specific audiences. The most dependable target group has traditionally been African Americans (Massood 13). In the latest decade, the number of films presenting all-black casts has substantially increased. With the improvement of positions of African Americans in society, the spectrum of subjects has shifted more to the mainstream. Films like “Just Wright” and “Brown Sugar” greatly resemble romantic comedies that feature actors of other race. Through the use of music and unique visual styles, “Just Wright” and “Brown Sugar” depict healthy black love.
Populated by stunning, lively women who use black vernacular, “Just Wright” creates a romantic world that springs up to the accented rhythms of black idioms like R&B, jazz, and hip-hop. The love story in an urban world is depicted to revolve around Latifah’s quest to find her ideal black man (Pough 32). The film lingers on the palatability of sexual tension that often burst at the scenes. It involves a pin on romance featuring Common, a recording artist, and Latifah. The movie also shows some love for black hair. The passionate male lead in the film asks his girl to confiscate her weave, saying that he fancies her real hair. "Just Wright" depicts a healthy black love and a love for the black popular culture.
The trophy, whom prince charming first decides on over Leslie, is her deceitful, shallow friend Morgan. While he is dressed to kill for the Nets games, his friend Leslie, a diehard basketball fan, puts on Nets shirt. Such costume is intended to depict her lack of pretention (Massood 16). To further depict this lack of affectation, Leslie drives a shabby old Mustang known as Eleanor. She refuses to fix Eleanor’s dent, arguing that it reminds her of a dimple. While working as a physical therapist for Scott, Leslie hears distant piano chords. She discovers that Scott is playing the music entitled “The More I See You.” She sits down and casually sings along. This soundtrack intensifies the film’s romantic aspect. In this scene, Scott distinguishes himself as a treasurable prince who prides on being an impeccable gentleman.
“Just Wright” combines the love story with dynamic basketball sequences that intersperses NBA professionals, and hip-hop soundtracks that serve to direct the film into a warm, steady beat. The audience is left wondering whether the perfect gentleman and the flawless home-girl will find impeccable harmony. After Scott agonizes in a lethal leg injury that jeopardizes his career, Leslie shows affection by moving into his house as his morale builder, physical therapist, and a simple homegirl (Pough 36). The film takes considerable time, mediated by love songs, for the couple to engage in conversations and fall in love. They act lovingly towards each other. The film of depicts love by the virtue that it refreshingly lack antagonists and stereotypical jocks. Overall, set to the core, “Just Wright” is nothing unique, but a romantic comedy genre.
Like “Just Wright,” “Brown Sugar” marries a true romantic flick strategy to create a mainstream black culture. The film fits into the category of black films on a lifestyle that was previously countercultural (Massood 19). It presents the hip-hop culture as a childhood experience that has transformed into a gainful lifestyle for Sid and Dre, who are the film’s main characters. The careers of the two characters are products of the American rage for pop culture. However, the characters’ love for hip-hop is so robust that it allows them to believe that they can realize a striking difference in the profession.
Like in “Just Wright,” “Brown Sugar” does not overlook the African-American element. The characters in the film are not entirely absorbed into the white business world of success. The film keeps hip-hop natural to Sid and Dre, and the hip-hop culture is ever present in their conversations, though not conspicuous.
