Hero was a priestess of the school of the Goddess Aphrodite, and she remained in a pillar in the classical town of Sestos, Thrace. Her tower topped the Dardanelles channel of water in Turkey and beyond that water, in Abydos, Mysia, leander lived.
Each time, all the youthful men of Abydos attended in Sestos the pantheon of Aphrodite for her festival. There, Hero and Leander Met and also fall in love. But it was a secretive love. Leander’s mother and father and Hero’s co priestesses would not have supported their relationship. And so, every time Hero would ignite a torch in her tower that serves a signal in the dark, and Leander would then follow that light as he paddled across the Hellespont to be with her loved ones, and then paddled back before sunup (Bennett).
