American Realism
American Realism movement is an art style, music and literature that represented the true contemporary social realities such as emotions, individualism, imaginations and the lives of everyday activities of ordinary people. The cause for the movement was to react against the rejection of Romanticism with links to emotions and individualism. The movements’ literature in the mid-19th century formed an important part of visual art in the early 20th century. Whether a culturally portrayed or a scenic view of American cities, the movements’ objectives attempted to define what was real and existing in the American working class. In brief, the American realism movement was concerned with how life was structured to various norms ranging from societal structures, economic structures, political and cultural structures during the mid-19th century. During the era of post-world War II, America's working-class people became disillusioned with society and the dream of America because of the hardships they faced from depression. Art plays written and produced during the Americas dramatic realism movement reflect an advocate and desire for a social variance from the presence. The Glass Menagerie and art by Tennessee William and the Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller take their effect, bearing no exceptions. William and Miller effectively scrutinised the impacts of the American Dream through Realism elementary theories to analyze political, class and gender norms.
Williams and Miller use common social examples in advocating for social differences hence providing the main focal point to the audience, which attracts the political interest of the realism following the devotion of commitment to work as well self-actualization of capitalist in the play. At the endpoint of the art play, Willie accepts his lack of success and personality traits despite spending a long time in sales before committing suicide. Willie's actions exemplify how people earn wealth if they spend more efforts fighting for it. Capitalists will have no chances of survival and will not work. Similarly, in The Glass Menagerie, when Tom runs away from his family to pursue his interests, he fully embraces capitalism and the materialism of the American Dream. At the final stage of the art play, Tom remains the same way he was and did not wholly earn any wealth. He disappears from his home to have the leisure of his interest and later describes the old cities as dead. These are some of the hidden rejections that realism fights to alter society and adopt a new lifestyle.
Miller and William utilize mundanes’ applicable duty in the Death of a salesman and Glass Menagerie to ill-praise the employees using promotional ambush methods. In Death of a salesman, Linda’s interactions with Willy concerning the struggle to settle monthly bills portrayed the reality affecting most working class families during the Great Depression. Criticism by Miller on different expectations of material stocks such as capital appliances used by the society made the employed people dependent on capitalism, and these forced them to serve the interests of the bourgeois. The working population was turned into slaves of themselves to earn extra upper-class ranks that included
