Latin American philosophy entails a collection of philosophical approaches that are common in the United States and part of the Western metaphysical tradition. According to Rahe (2017, p. 63), Francisco Bilbao is one of the Latin American thinkers, who reacted against the historical Spanish colonialism. Besides, the philosopher sought ways of enhancing moral reform and enabling democratic practices in the fraternity of Latin American nations. Bilbao believed that idea of progress and civilizing ideals were relevant aspects towards civilization. Notably, civilization resulted in the backwardness prosperity of independent nations. For that reason, Bilbao underscored the civilization's fallacy on the invasion of France in Mexico.
Accordingly, Bilbao made decisions based on liberal ideology, which could have endangered the mission of civilization to justify colonial expansion. Modern liberalism in both Europe and France was a remedy to the issues of decolonization. For that reason, Bilbao criticized the legacy of Spanish colonialism from the liberal ideology of the United States and France. However, Alberdi and Sarmiento failed to uncover a reticulation of power that existed during the 19th century. The philosophers should have considered ways that Bilbao denounced US imperial designs and modernity of the United States (Deniz, 2017, p. 45). Importantly, they should have recognized that Bilbao explored internal colonialism during imperial expansion. Bilbao might have explored the destructive cooperation of the various native elites. Political ideas of import existed in the 1830s before the emergence of the term Latin America.
