Historically, writing has played a crucial role in shaping Kenyan identity and culture. Before the arrival of Europeans, Kenyans had a rich oral tradition that passed down stories, traditions, and customs from generation to generation. With the introduction of writing, however, Kenyans could record their history, literature, and culture in a tangible form that could be preserved and shared with future generations. For example, in the 1930s and 1940s, Jomo Kenyatta, a prominent Kenyan nationalist, wrote extensively about Kikuyu customs and traditions, helping to preserve and promote the culture of his people.
Writing enabled Kenyans to promote their culture and traditions to the wider world, facilitating greater understanding and appreciation. As Kenyatta noted, “It is the duty of each generation to preserve its own culture, and that of its ancestors, and transmit it to the next generation” (Kenyatta 20).
