A growing number of the elderly population has oral cancer. Laraway et al., goes an extra mile to discuss the quality of life for the older individuals who have oral cancer (Laraway, Lakshmiah, Lowe, Roe & Rogers, 2012). The decision on treatment of oral cancer, as discussed in the article, depends on health-related quality of life. The research uses the University of Washington scale to measure the quality of life for the old age group one year following surgery. Survival rate was assessed using the data from the National Statistics. Elderly patients treated for oral squamous cell carcinoma were included in the study that sought to analyze the quality of life. Conclusive results from the study indicated that older patients who are 65 years old and over had better physical and emotional function (Laraway, Lakshmiah, Lowe, Roe & Rogers, 2012). It is without a doubt that older patients seem adjusts and copes well to treatment as reflected by the quality of life scores.
The article by Locker, Slade and Murray is a review of periodontal disease among older adults. The article envisages at understanding both clinical and epidemiological research on periodontal disease. The article recognizes that approach that was used in the 60s that suggested that periodontitis was a continuous progressive condition. The disease began as gingivitis later progressing to the periodontal ligament (Locker, Slade, & Murray, 1998).
