Literacy Assessment
Literacy assessment applies to decision-making processes that result in indent analysis of students' success on the practices of engaging and creating all kinds of multimodal tests. The assessment includes all aspects of evaluation ranging from formative responses to students writing to the development of higher-stakes assessments (Levi & Inbar-Lourie, 2019). The assessments are often conducted in a classroom setting to assist participants in identifying and strengthening areas of concern, next steps, and progress priorities. Types of literacy assessments that guide decision-making include running records, curriculum-based measurement, and concept print. Running records help capture students' thoughts, curriculum-based measurements help assess students' ability in reading fluency, and Concept of Print is simply the basic understanding of how books and print work in a classroom context (Ng et al., 2020). However, the paper aims to critically evaluate and analyze critical ideas for understating literacy assessments to assist in decision-making in education matters and provide recommendations on the resources applied to support literacy assessment success.
Formal and informal assessments help in understanding literacy assessment (Walsh, 2009). Formal literacy assessments typically involve standardized procedures that require the assessment to be administered and scored in the same manner for all students. The use of standardized tests as an example of standard assessment measures competence in one or more literacy contexts, such as reading, writing, and listening. In this case, students are given the same test at their given grade levels. Teachers read out the same instructions to all students in the same way as students are given the same time to complete the test during the admi ministration of standardized tests. The standardized test applies the same method of grading and recording the same test (Ng et al., 2020). However, informal literacy assessment is a method of gathering information that can be used to judge students' progress and comprehension that does not rely on standardized formats. They are those impromptu kinds of assessment that can easily be incorporated into a regular classroom session. Informal assessment that can be used includes observation, projections, presentation experiments, demonstrations, and even asking questions in classroom sessions (Ng et al., 2020).
