Disasters are not planned, and when they strike, the response should be immediate to reduce cases of casualties. Logistics are necessary to ensure that response is sufficient. For this reason, logistics is critical in effective and efficient disaster management (Vaillancourt & Haavisto, 2015). Disasters are unplanned disruptions in the daily routine that are capable of causing losses, injuries, and fatalities to those involved.
When disasters strike, it can cut off communication line and disrupt the supply chain making it difficult to carry out rescue operations. For this reason, logistics that should be used have to be more resilient. For example, when hurricane hits a city, communication lines and transport networks are cut off and the area cannot be accessed on road. The military respond to such a disaster by using helicopters to rescue those trapped by the disaster.
