Abstract
The completion of the Marmaray railway tunnel project was one of the major Turkish achievements. It is a multi-billion dollar project that links the two continents of Asia and Europe. Its funding was a success and involved three major banks in the world. Various stakeholders came into play at different levels of the construction just to see it through. Planning for this project took quite some time just to look into its quality. Various risks were involved in this project more so on manpower because most of the work took place at the sea-bed below the water surface. It was undertaken to reduce traffic congestion in the major Turkish roads.
The Marmaray Project
When looking at the major projects in the world, the Marmaray tunnel project in the Turkish city of Istanbul can never be forgotten. It is a 76-kilometre multi-billion dollar railway transportation tunnel that links Europe and Asia. So far it is one of the largest transport projects that ever succeeded in the world. The project was started in the year 2004 and officially inaugurated in the year 2013 by the Turkish Republic. According to Defterios (2013).
For the project to be a success, the Turkish Ministry of Transportation had to take the task of planning for the quality of the work they were to undertake. First and foremost a sketch of the map of the Marmara Sea was made and studied, as it is where the tunnel is built. According to Efe (2016). A funding agreement deal was struck between the Turkish government and the Japanese bank for international cooperation. Other funding were from the European Investment Bank, and Counsel of European Development Bank, In total the estimated project cost was $4.5bn. Competitive bidding was carried out to select a proper engineering firm that was to undertake the project thereby ensuring quality work.
Various stakeholders were involved at different stages of the Marmaray Project. Engineering experts from all over the world all contributed to its success. All the above mentioned Banks gave their best to make it a success. The BCI and the CRI Contractors were both awarded for the success of this mega project. The Turkish Ministry of Transport played a significant role in the completion of the task.
Various risks were incurred during the building of this grand railway tunnel. The sea was so rough that it actually threatened the life of engineers that were working deep down at the sea-bed, this was always due to unpredictable weather.
