Application and Definition of Conflict, Interactionism and Functionalism Theory in Marriage Institution
Introduction
Sociologists study patterns, interactions, social events and develop sociology theory to explain why things have taken a certain course. Sociological theories attempt to explain various aspects of society and propose hypothesis to explain the patterns (Ray, 2020). For example, Ray studied suicide which is generally considered a personal phenomenon and hypothesized that variations in suicide rates can be clarified on basis of religion. (Ray, 2020). In Ray's research, protestants were found to have more rates of suicide than the Catholics. This paper gives a summary of social conflict theory, functionalist theory (functionalism), and symbolistic interactionism theory. The paper also shows the application of the theories in the marriage institution.
Marriage Institution
Depending on the community, marriage may require civil or religious sanction. However, some couples may be considered as married because of living together for a given period (common law of marriage) (Benjamin & Ekebosi, 2020). Although marriage ceremonies, roles, and rules may differ from one community to the other, marriage is generally considered as a social institution. In most cultures, marriage serves several functions; marriage defines kinship ties and it gives children a social identity.
