Gender and Sexuality in “South Park”
Presently, the prevalent thinking considers men and women to be different physically to the extent that they are viewed as two different species. Human societies across the globe do not only view women as being physically different but also assign different social standards and expectations to them. This is explored in Ellen Miller’s “Raisins, Whores, and Boys: Gender and Sexuality in South Park where the author attempts to establish an understanding of human identity based on the assemblage of representations and discourses that react and critique dominant positions on sexuality. The author begins by questioning the morality of popular songs and entertainment media that advance obscene and abusive language, especially towards women and motherhood. The television series South Park follows on a similar trend of popular media that entrenches traditional and conservative views on gender. In her article, Ellen critiques the show by noting that it raises red flags for feminists. However, she notes that the show is not entirely bad for feminists since they can indulge in its humor and comedy. Men and women undergo daily comparisons in the workplace, sports, or personal situation based on their physiological and biological aspects, with more retrogressive stereotypic views being directed towards women. Across many cultures, women are often stereotyped as weaker and less intelligent than men, a factor that limits their progression both in the workplace and in other social spheres. Ellen Miller’s “Raisins, Whores, and Boys: Gender and Sexuality in South Park” presents a persuasively researched article that is supported by statistical evidence, expert opinions, and researched evaluation on gender issues to highlight the reasons the world is struggling with gender inequality.
