In the United States, State Secession refers to the withdrawal of one or more States from the Union that forms the United States of America. The term may also refer to cleaving of a State or Territory to establish a separate region or a new State. Secession may also be used to refer to the severing of an area from a city or a county that is within a State. Arguments that justifies secession from the United States have formed the basis of the country's politics right from its birth. Some politicians have argued that secession should be made a constitutional right while others hold the argument that secession should be a form of natural right of revolution.
The most serious secession in the United States of America advanced in the year 1860 and 1861. During this time, eleven Southern State declared themselves as seceded from the Union and they formed the Confederate States of America. However, the movement collapsed in the year 1865 after the Confederate forces were defeated by the Union armies during the American Civil War.
