source..Metaphorical view on Thinking as a Hobby
William Golding put a lot of metaphors in his paper entitled Thinking as a Hobby to better convey his meaning to his readers. The first one was the placement of the statuette owned by the headmaster and the second was how he categorize the types of thinking into different grades.
As we grow older, changes appear in us because we learn a lot of things. In his paper, there has been three changes in the placement of the statuette and each change shows us his changing perspectives of life. According to Golding (n.d.) in his first visit, the leopard was placed facing the filing cabinet, the lady next to her and beyond the leopard was the thinking man. His interpretation was the lady was in panic, the leopard ready for the next kill and the thinking man in utter misery (p. 140). It portrays the childish innocence of his mind at that time free from the prejudice of society.
