Microsoft was created on April 4, 1975, by Bill Gates and Paul Allen, to build and distribute Simple interpreters for Altair 8800. It grew to lead the market for personal computer operating systems with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, preceded by Microsoft Windows. The company's initial public offering (IPO) in 1986, accompanied by a spike in its share price, produced three billionaires and an approximate 12,000 millionaires from Microsoft employees. After the 1990s, it has gradually diversified from the operating system business and purchased a variety of corporate acquisitions, the biggest of which was the “acquisition of LinkedIn for $26.2 billion in December 2016, accompanied by the acquisition of Skype Telecommunications for $8.5 billion in May 2011.”
