How does consolidation of media, the alignment of media with governments, and the monopolization of media (most of these technology companies now own or have stocks in media and publishing companies) impact the knowledge we interact with? How does the knowledge that is created and shared with us (by books, the internet, teachers, etc) alter or maintain our worldview and why is this important as we spend more of our time with algorithms swaying our browsing habits or the ability for companies to block or take things down at a moment’s notice?
The knowledge we interact with is affected by consolidation of media that is identified as the concentration of media ownership portrayed when there is a state of monopoly or oligopoly in a certain media industry. This is viewed as a problem of contemporary media and society. Numerous undesirable consequences emerge when there is a high concentration of media ownership. An example is that there may be a reduced diverse opinions and voices present in the media. There may be few available opportunities for relaying concerns and getting to reach the public. Also, a healthy, market-based competition may be absent resulting in an increased price and slow innovation.
