Introduction
Across the globe, the demand of educated people has been increasing on a daily basis with the educated individuals acquiring good and well-paying jobs. As a result, most parents are doing their level best to ensure that their children are in a position of acquiring quality education that will lead to brightening the future if these kids. To utilize this opportunity, most children are taken to better schools that are believed to offer quality services and record lead to good performance among the students. However, the performance is partly determined by the materials used for studying such as best teachers, books and lessons as this will not get the student enthusiastic about learning. For the students to be agitated and be willing to study, they must be motivated which together with other materials; they will perform better. Motivation is a key factor that will determine the performance of the students in all phases of education and, therefore, teachers, parents and the whole society to encourage students that will lead to a successful accomplishment of students followed with good results. As such, this essay will focus onto the different ways of motivating high school students that will lead to successful ending of the academic study.
Motivation of students can be both extrinsic and extrinsic that will ensure that students are ever excited when it comes to studying. In addition, through this motivation, the students will work hard in their studies, and they will not be forced to strive for success. Similarly, through this motivation, the number of school dropouts will decrease, and the level of drug abuse amongst students will as well reduce. In most cases, teachers are believed to play a pivotal role in motivating students since most of the time they are always together implying that they are in position of having a big impact in the daily activities of the students (Condron, 2014).
Various ways can be used to motivate students and have a big and better impact in their academic lives. Amongst these, ways is ensuring that students are congratulated in anything big or small they do. To achieve this, teachers can be acknowledging any improvement done by students and ensure that the students is awarded accordingly and letting the parents of the kid know the progress made by the kid (Condron, 2014). Additionally, the student’s hard work can be recognized by holding honor demos that will make the surrounding society aware of the good performance made by these students. In addition, according to the Nadell, Langan & Comodromos (2011), interactive chat sessions in Cyberschool will encourage the students to relate well with the community and easy monitoring of the students’ progress.
Correspondingly, giving students some control forces motivates them in a great way as they do what they want at their will. This is achieved by giving them the ownership of what they do in class without any close monitoring that gives no room for complaining from the students. Teachers can accomplish this by carrying out a random interview of the whole class by asking them what they like doing, and what makes them happy. From the answers gotten, the teacher will be able to know and provide the favorites of these students thus motivating them (Condron, 2014). In addition, students can be motivated by allowing them to take part in the societal role. According to the Nadell, Langan & Comodromos (2011) Cyberschool will enable students in extracurricular activities that will allow them to mentor and perform community service thus displaying social responsiveness across the network.
Moreover, competition amongst the students can be used to motivate students. Teachers are supposed to enhance this competition in a positive way (Jackson, 2011). This competition can be achieved through creation of different groups and teams that will challenge each other thus leading to the improvement of groups as well as individual students. In addition, such competition can be achieved through the use of different games where the participants are challenged to hit a certain set target. This in turn motivates students enabling them to be active even in the class.
According to Nadell, Langan & Comodromos (2011), knowing a student in deep is very essential as it easy to know the behaviors of that particular student. The urge of a teacher knowing a student in deep is to allow them to be in a position of monitoring them easily and be in a position of noticing any behavioral change. Nadell, Langan & Comodromos (2011), continues to argue that, knowing the student is not all about knowing their names but it’s far beyond this in order to show them that he or she cares about their well-being (Rumberger, 2011). From her research, most students were drug addicts and others used to party throughout yet their teachers did not notice any of this since they never knew their students well. Therefore, this implies that, by knowing the student well will not only motivate them but also help in preventing students from involving them in mischievous behaviors (Kunjufu, 2010).
In addition, student motivation can be attained by creating an enabling environment for the students. An enabling environment should allow a student to study without application of any forceful mechanism either from the teacher or parents. This encourages the student to carry out any activity from their own good will and not trying to avoid the consequences of not doing so (Ormrod, 2012). Moreover, changing the environmental setting of studying will help break the boredom of students staying in class every day. Teachers can opt to change the teaching by either taking a visit in the library or take field trips (Irvin, 2009). This will break the monotony of staying in class and refresh the minds of the students making them to be active in class after involvement of these activities.
Also, the teacher should always be excited whenever he or she attends the class. The teacher should continuously be full enthusiasm when teaching and should also, use simple ad friendly examples when teaching. This curbs the problem of dullness of some of the students whenever a boring teacher is about to attend the lesson. However, if the teacher is active and enthusiastic, the students will always be eager to attend his or her lesson that facilitates class participation amongst the students.
Teachers are not the only people who can take part in motivating students. As such, other parties like parents and the whole society contributes to this motivation as well. Parents are involved in this motivation by showing some interest in the academic progress of their children. They can attain this by showing concern over the daily progress of their kids by asking them what new they have learnt each day. More so, they can assist their children in handling any ...
