How Women are represented in Science Fiction
Presently, movies with men and power are more pronounced than those with women and power. Science fiction movies take the audience to a different spectrum. Actions in some of the films we find in the genre of science fiction take place in faraway galaxies occupied by humans, elves, hobbits and dwarves; imaginary lands like Underland and Narnia on planet Pandora; and other magical worlds where werewolves and vampires exist. Science fiction films enable us to imagine an entirely new universe away from the real world. These films significantly address issues of diversity, multiculturalism, and inclusion since the characters are often from different ethnicities. Unlike in the real world, the relationships in science fiction films are overrated since the characters are very accommodating, and equality is well portrayed. Women are mostly left out in science fiction. At first, we may see women in these films as intelligent and powerful, but a close look at them will prove the contrary. Apparently, men are inherently superior in the films. This paper will discuss the characters of Leia in “Star Wars: A New Hope” film and Hermione Granger in “Harry Potter and Philosopher’s Stone,” (regarding dominance, leadership, victimization, violence, etc.)
