The Reasons that Make Instagram so Popular
Instagram is the most popular social media application among young people globally. According to Sheng-Fang Su and Yi-Ting Huang, an estimated more than 70% of young between 12-24 years subscribe to the social network (Su & Huang, 2018, p. 1). This paper looks at the reasons that have made Instagram the most popular social media network among young people. Instagram, established in 2010 has trampled competitors such as Twitter and Snapchat in the social network space ("Why Is Instagram So Popular? We Asked Active Users To Explain," 2018). Instagram has surpassed its expectations in users because it no longer used in the social context only but in other spheres such the business and marketing.
A global survey conducted in 2017 regarding internet users revealed that the number of smartphones users has increased to astonishing levels (Su & Huang, 2018, p. 2). Instagram works well on mobile phones either through browsing platforms such as Opera Mini and Chrome or through their app available in both Google and IOS store. Instagram built on the opportunity that young people have become addicted to their mobile phones. On the contrary, Instagram has limited the features of their application available in the desktop and laptop version to ride on the smartphone wave. People's reliability on smartphone use in the contemporary world has significantly contributed to Instagram popularity.
