Multicultural Characteristics
Multicultural counselling takes into consideration all personal differences like sexuality, ethnicity, mental, religion, physical disability, or gender. Unfortunately, many counsellors have continued to face many problems, including dealing with their professional issues, ethical dilemmas, and personal expectations and responsibilities in their life, work, and society. These can lead to problems in their training level and multicultural competence.
As a counsellor, one of the multicultural characteristics I am likely to face when working with Chinese client is the language barriers. From my first conversation with the client, I realized that the client does not speak fluent English and this is one of the biggest challenges in multicultural counselling because it can lead to misunderstanding between my client and me as seen in many counselling cases. Also, some signs and facial expressions have different meanings in his culture; therefore, applying these signs and symbols would not convey my intended messages effectively. However, to effectively counsel my client, I would have to look for a translator, even though this could be expensive on my side.
