Introduction
Tibet is renowned as one of the strongholds of Buddhism, with it being officially recognized as the national religion in the nation. This religion has a rich history, particularly in the nation of Tibet, where it consists of a combination of Shamanic and Tantric teachings with Mahayana Buddhism as well as material from an ancient religion of Tibet known in the past as Bon.
The objective of this paper is to discuss the history of Buddhism in the nation, with particular focus on the conditions under which the religion spread into Tibet. The paper also discusses the reasons as to why Buddhism was accepted as the official national religion in the nation. It determines that Tibetan Buddhism originated from India and the nation and its religious teachers played a critical role in the establishment of the religion in Tibet. The paper also acknowledges that Tibetan leaders are largely responsible for the adoption of Buddhism as the official religion of the nation of Tibet.
Tibet before the Introduction of Buddhism
Prior to the introduction of Buddhism in Tibet, the Tibetans had an entirely different religion. Before the 7th century CE, these people had a religion known as the cult of the divine king or “Bon”, in the Tibetan language CITATION Sch15 \l 1033 (Schaeffer, 2015). According to this cult, the divine king was a direct descendant of celestial beings who came to earth by means of the “sky rope”, a form of transportation between worlds. The divine king was the giver of law and held priestly class in the society. This spiritual leader was reborn perennially due to the essence of royal ancestors and in fact, came back to life as a new born each time he died. Some of the teachings of Bon are actually included in the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism in practice today.
