Introduction
Recent studies show that 3% of emergency department presentations are psychiatric. This paper is aimed at discussing the barriers encountered during a personal clinical practice in the emergency department as it is the area I wish to pursue. The method used included an observation study and questionnaire in a tertiary referral emergency department. Psychiatric nurses in this department undertook a questionnaire following patient discharge to determine the barriers they encountered while attending to patients.
The research involved interviews with the nurses and the doctors as they interacted with the patients frequently. These interviews were aimed at identifying the patients as well all getting an actual percentage of psychiatric patients. Both gender we categorized and 4 out of 10 patients who visited the emergency department were women. A report by the National Alliance on Mental illness by number in the united states shows that 19.1% of United States adults experienced mental illness in 2018, thus representing 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness.
The national survey of mental health collected data particularly in three groups which include Anxiety disorders, affective disorders, substance use disorders. Finding from this survey took 12 months for the interviews. The survey also collected data on the uses of health services by the patients, the medication of the patients, physical conditions and social networks. These findings were provided to the Australian Government, Department of health to improve the sector. The main aim of the survey was to collect accurate data about substance use, the prevalence of mental and behavioral disorders. It helped to determine what challenges these patients faced on an individual level as well as a public level.
