Films have been one of the most common forms of art in the 21st century. Like most forms of art, themes are a vital characteristic of movies. The theme of dystopia has been one of the most exploited by filmmakers. However, the production and consumption of such films rely on capitalistic market forces. In this case, filmmakers produce movies that people are likely to watch, and people select the ones to watch based on their preferences. Therefore, to understand the reasons for the exploitation of the post-apocalyptic theme, it is crucial to examine the preferences of the audience and the filmmakers.
A reason that causes audiences to prefer post-apocalyptic films is the belief in the inevitable end of civilization, and the possibility of human extinction. The modern world is faced by several problems that are either created by people or occur naturally. Both types of challenges have exposed the limitations of human survival on the planet.
