Race Discrimination in Sports
Ethics is a fundamental concept used in various disciplines including sports. It involves certain moral principles that can be explored to understand its role in sports experience. However, discovering the distinction between morality and ethics is necessary in order to explore the nuances of sports ethics and how they apply to the various individuals involved in this field. Notably, morality and ethics are two concepts often used interchangeably yet they express different modes of thinking. For instance, ethics entails the study of basic relationships between people while morality focuses on values (Bowen, Katz, Mitchell, Polden, & Walden, 2017). For that reason, ethics can be described as being an academic approach used to discover and discuss what is right and good. On the other hand, morality expresses how one is expected to or not to act. Ethical considerations and morality are important in determining acceptance of certain concepts in the sports world including the use of names such as the Washington Redskins.
Question 1a
The Issue-Contingent Model
The issue contingent model is an ethical decision-making framework that can be used to determine the acceptability of the name Washington Redskins. This framework was introduced by Professor Thomas Jones who felt that the existing models were not exploring the issue of ethics correctly. The issue contingent model is an improved version of pre-existing theoretical frameworks and is based on social psychology (Bowen, Katz, Mitchell, Polden, & Walden, 2017). The framework introduces a new variable known as moral intensity which lacks in other models of ethical decision making. It accounts for several components including the social consequences, their magnitude, the probability of effect and how concentrated the effect will be. The model further suggested the possibility of two people rightly making different decisions when faced with a similar ethical decision due to these components (Bowen, Katz, Mitchell, Polden, & Walden, 2017). For that reason, not all ethical decisions will be similar due to the differences in the intensity of the consequences of either decision.
