Winston S. Churchill said, “Success is stumbling from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm. My journey in education has not been all rosy. While everyone hopes that they will join school and prosper, I experienced numerous hurdles. From the onset, I wanted to specialize in sign language; nonetheless, I did not get the opportunity since Mercy school does not offer this course. As such, my only other viable option was to do English. So I began the classes with high hopes of succeeding, but like all different journeys, mine was one full of despair as will be illustrated by this reflection essay.
When I received my associate’s degree I thought about switching schools because Mercy didn’t have the degree I wanted to pursue. I was looking for a school that has a certification in sign language for the deaf. On doing my preliminary research, I found out that I would lose credit if I switched schools. I decided to go back to Mercy to major in English. I chose English; my choice was influenced by the fact that I would get an opportunity to use my creativity: I have always had a knack for creative writing. People thought it was odd for me to choose English since I always struggling with reading, comprehension, spelling and grammar in my writing. But I’d always been drawn to English; even in high school, I took extra English classes. These were drama classes; I always did the school plays. I think this indicated that I had a deep interest in story and characters and creativity Ever since I was a little girl I seemed to pick up sign language just by watching Sesame Street. Years later, I begun to work as a paraprofessional for the NYC Dept. of Education. I ended up working in a class of deaf students. One of the speakers was amazed at my ability to pick up the language. She and I spoke at great length about how there is a strong need for hearing people who are fluent in sign language to be translators. Upon selecting English Language as my major, I made a resolve I wanted to be an interpreter. My ultimate goal in life is to become a sign language translator. In order to achieve this goal I had to overcome two large hurdles. The first was the fact that not many schools had that program I had interest in and the ones that had would not take my credit from Mercy school to enable me to continue as a junior. As such, I resolved to go back to Mercy to finish my degree. Since I always liked creative writing and the theater, I declared English as my major.
While studying English at Mercy, learning grammar had initially proven a hard nut to crack. Even though I was very attentive in class, I severally got mixed up in applying parts of speech appropriately. My confusion with parts of speech made my grammar to have several syntax errors. Realizing that it would become a bigger problem in the future, I practiced more and furnished my knowledge of the English language. In grammar, I came across confusing words like there and there but I practiced on furnishing my grammar knowledge until I learned to differentiate them. Knowing all parts of speech and applying them appropriately really eased my understanding of English.
Also, I could not have learned English without working on my spelling. One of my greatest achievements in grammar was overcoming spelling problems. While writing without computerized aids, I often misspelled long words that had more complex syllable or vowel formation. I remember struggling to write the word onomatopoeia in poetry. Through thorough practice, I was, however, able to overcome this problem. To spell words correctly, I had to read the words several times until I learned how sounds are spelled. Now I can learn a new word and spell it correctly with much ease.
English is an interesting major and I wish as many people would realize. Interestingly, English is funny too! as I came to see. I came across palindromes and pun. Palindromes as I learned, are words that read the same from backward like radar. Puns are grammatically correct words, statements, or phrases tha
