A crucial step in remaining involved in your kids' schooling, friends, and hobbies is to maintain open lines of contact with them as they grow up.
Use phrases like "tell me more," "what do you think," and other open-ended inquiries. These sorts of statements demonstrate to your children that you are interested in their thoughts, ideas, and worldview and that you are paying attention.
Even if the subjects are challenging or uncomfortable, start critical conversations with your kids about death, violence, sex, drugs, and alcohol (read more about substance abuse). Do not hold off on seeking help until your kids or teenagers do. View our discussion-starting advice for tackling challenging topics with your kids. Children must have clearly defined rules and boundaries set for them so that they understand what is expected of them and the repercussions for disobeying. Make sure kids understand the reason for the rules when you set them, and be consistent when you enforce them.
If kids are involved in creating the rules and, frequently, choosing the penalties, discipline will be more effective. Always be fair and adaptable; as your kids get older, they'll be prepared for more rights and different rules and restrictions. By your example, you may teach your children the importance of following rules and regulations, being responsible, showing empathy for others, managing anger, and handling stress.
Knowing your child's typical behaviors will help you see any behavior changes, even the smallest ones, and will give you a head's up that something is wrong.
Parents should be alerted to potential issues by sudden changes, whether they are minor or significant. One of them might be a friend withdrawal, a drop in grades, a sudden stop to a child's participation in sports or extracurricular activities, sleep disturbances, eating issues, evasiveness, lying, and persistent physical concerns (stomachache or headaches). Study up on mental and emotional health.
When kids show behavior or attitudes that have the potential to hurt them or others, parents need to step in and step in. Additionally, you don't have to deal with issues alone because the best therapies involve a team effort between parents, educators, and healthcare professionals who offer ongoing monitoring and support. Engaging in your children's education will demonstrate to them that you value education and that you want them to succeed in school. Meet the teachers who will be teaching your kid, and assist them in getting to know you and your child. The entire school year, not just when issues arise, should be a time for communication with your child's instructors.
