Healthcare testing in the U.S. is debilitating to both patients and the healthcare system. Dr. Atul Gawande affirms that in the long-term, overtreatment exposes a patient to more harm than remedy. For instance, cancer screenings may detect benign cancers (for example, microcarcinoma) that create anxiety in patients who demand surgeries. A surgery exposes the patient to excessive risks than potential benefits. Another example is the use of arthroscopic surgery to treat knee osteoarthritis where a sham surgery would have been appropriate—Additionally, the use of surgical treatment for low-grade prostate cancer than watchful waiting. Patient pressure, physician profiteering, fear of malpractice, and complexities in obtaining medical records are the commonly cited causes for overtreatment. Unnecessary tests unveil problems that do not need any fixing, thereby creating fear and anxiety in patients. Therefore, the persons affected resort to paying excessive medical expenses (high cost of care) and are further exposed to significant risks than potential benefits.
