Introduction
Fluency is the ease of expressing oneself through speech articulately. It can also be described as the ease of speaking foreign language accurately. Therefore, second language can be described as the language that one learns after the native language. Second language is mostly used in government and even educational functions where most of the speakers and participants are non natives. Fluency is used mostly by researchers and teachers to elaborate on native language and non native language. Second language fluency can be used to give clear description on the written performance. This article reviews the research done on second language fluency in terms of its effects, causes and how it’s used generally.
Learning second language on the first language has been found to be vital tool especially to those still learning. The proficiency of the second language user can be determined by some factors that incorporate speaking style, effects of the first language and even the speaking style. Findings done have shown that second language derives most of its problem from the first language. First language has a great effect on the second language. The effect of learning the first language is sometimes affecting some individuals who try to learn the second language. Drawing some of the differences between fluency related to native language performance and fluency in relation to teaching of foreign language and testing. The findings indicate that fluency is crucial because non- negative performance sometimes can be judged (Wineberg, 2005). Several schemes and most probably tests can be judged considering fluency. Considering native speakers fluency is the basic tool that can be used to gauge the performance or output of a speaker. The problem arises when fluency is used in gauging the performance of a speaker because it does not contain the criteria of evaluation. The learning of the second language involves making speech on top of native speakers, self corrections, poor start and high rate of repetition. Findings show that native speech involves a lot of repairs and hesitation. The native speech has a characteristic of not always being continuous and smooth. Studies that have been done have indicated that there is a big difference between second language and first language. The idea has been achieve through the comparison of a number of quantitative fluencies and its measures (Segalowitz, 2010). The result of research shows that the rating of fluency a language is affected by the rate of speeches and the number of pauses that a person produces. Research done on the rate of speech shows clearly that the rate at which a speaker produces words from his mouth, sounds produced and the number of pauses brings out a clear description of fluency.
