Shakespeare Description of Human Complexity Portrayed in Hamlet
Complexity in the human being is regarded as possessing unique traits that are not understandable in nature and such, those in possession are isolated and even feared to be associated with. Unique people consider themselves more knowledgeable and tend to take up roles in society that are normally unacceptable. Shakespeare depicts humans as complex beings who are in a constant battle to accept that they are humans. How human beings deal with mortality, loneliness, and how they seek meaning in life is what makes them complex. Shakespeare explains human complexity as portrayed by Hamlet using the theme, figurative language, hypocrisy, mortality, and tone (Bloom,1998).
Theme and tone
Shakespeare uses the tone and theme character of Hamlet to show complexity in humans. Hamlet the prince of Denmark has just lost his father to what he believes is murder by his uncle who has also wedded his mother, a disrespectful act that he must avenge. Shakespeare uses the theme of revenge to describe the character of Hamlet who seeks to kill his uncle who is the element of peace in Denmark, knowing that his death will bring chaos, the nature of Hamlet that seeks revenge on one side but still hopes for peace on the other is what is described as a complex trait in hamlet (Shakespeare, 2014).
Mortality
Shakespeare also uses the complexity of mortality in scene 5 of act 1, where the ghost of Hamlet's father comes to him and urges him to avenge his death. The ghost of Hamlet's father accuses Claudius, the uncle as the suspect. Hamlet is the new king but he must avenge his father as told by the ghost. The complexity of mortality is portrayed by the existence of the afterlife and the ability of the dead to talk to the living (Bloom,1998). Hamlet confirms the existence of ghosts by his weird behavior to even fail to take up advice from Ophelia, the act of Hamlet forgoing advice from the person he loves proves, even more, the complexity of mortality and the afterlife (Shakespeare Birthplace, 2016).
Figurative language and hypocrisy
Shakespeare uses figurative language to show readers complexity in human beings. Claudius and Gertrude are happily married but disunity between her son, Hamlet, and his husband does not bother her. Gertrude fails to open her eyes to notice the hypocrisy and dark side of Claudius that her son was trying to show her, to the realization the readers, Gertrude dies from the poisoned wine that had been made for Hamlet. The death of Gertrude should be upon her by failing to take note of the figurative language complexity had since been evident from the start (Shakespeare Birthplace, 2016)
Characterization
The realization that Hamlet is to be blamed for the death of Polonius, Laertes plans to avenge his father. During the fencing match between Hamlet and Laertes. Laertes cuts Hamlet with a poisoned sword and also accidentally cuts himself. During the match Laertes reveals to Hamlet that Claudius killed Gertrude, Hamlet strikes his uncle with the poisoned sword and all of them die together. The complexity of characterization can be seen in the internal conflicts that Hamlet and Laertes try to avenge their fathers and Claudius trying to eliminate his enemies to stay alive and in powers but eventually, they all lost and die in the end (Haque,2016)
