Shakespeare's Conveyance of the Complexities of the Human Condition in Hamlet
Shakespeare, an accomplished and acclaimed writer, addressed a wide range of issues in his works. In Hamlet, he makes observations on the human condition, delving into its complexities. He defines the human condition as people's struggles with being human as they seek meaning, deal with loneliness, deal with the limitations of free will versus social programming, and deal with the reality of immortality. As a result, being a complex human being entails grappling with the human condition while attempting to meet external expectations. These complexities are personified by Hamlet and Claudius. Shakespeare uses tone, characterization, and themes to illustrate the complexities of the human condition as characters struggle with social indoctrination, freewill, greed, betrayal, corruption, and mortality.
Shakespeare uses themes and symbolism to flesh out Hamlet's complex character. He is a complex melancholy character who is angry about his father's death, his true love's rejection, and betrayal from his friends. He wants to avenge his father's death because he believes his uncle murdered him (Shakespeare, Hirschfeld & Edwards, 2019). When his uncle marries his mother, his rage grows and his desire grows stronger. As a result, Shakespeare demonstrates how complicated humans are through the theme of anger, as some, like Hamlet, choose anger and revenge while others take a different path. People face a variety of quandaries and make a variety of decisions about how to handle their affairs (Firouzjaee & Pourkalhor, 2014). Shakespeare shows the human condition is complex, and people struggle with various issues, resolving them differently, through the theme of rage and vengeance, as well as a melancholy and stern tone.
Mortality, the afterlife, greed, justice, and forgiveness are human condition complexities embodied by Hamlet and his relationship with his father's father. When his father's father visits, he requests vengeance and justice from Hamlet. The ghost accuses Claudius of committing a "foul and most unnatural murder" (Shake"peare, Hirschfeld & Edwards, 2019). Claudius, on the other hand, is the new king and Hamlet'sher. In this state, Hamlet considers himself a "rogue" and a "peasant slave" to his "complex condition" (Shakespeare, Hirschfeld & Edwards, 2019). He is torn between keeping the kingdom at peace by sparing the new king's lking'sd avenging his father as his ghost had directed. Shakespeare demonstrates the complexities of the human condition through Hamlet's decisions and the ghost's fe activities. Hamlet must choose between acting in the interests of the living and preserving the kingdom's peace or acting in the interests of the dead (the ghost) and avenging his father.
Claudius betrays his nephew by informing Laertes of his father's affair. He orchestrated a series of events that led to his death in a moment of weakness, imprudence, and ignorance. When Laertes cuts himself with his poisoned sword and later Hamlet, he begs forgiveness, telling Hamlet, "Haste m" to know't, know't, with wings as swift/ As meditation or thoughts of love/ May sweep to my revenge" (Shake"peare, Hirschfeld & Edwards, 2019). Hamlet instinctively forgives him for his blunder. As a result, Shakespeare portrays the human condition as a complex give-and-take situation. People act out of rage and without g
