Should Capital Punishment Exist?
Each day, several individuals are sentenced in the United States following their conviction of offences ranging from minor to severe. Regardless of the nature of the crimes committed, a good number of these offenders find it hard to come into terms with what awaits them at the sentencing stage, mainly because of the fear of being locked up in prisons. However, the situation is usually worst for those charged with capital offences like murder, espionage, or treason, whose sentences can always attract capital punishment. In the American context, capital punishment has always meant the imposition of the death penalty upon a convicted capital offender and the subsequent execution of the said offender (Johnson, 2011), mostly by lethal injection. Though, several other states in the U.S. have other secondary methods of execution like firing squad in Utah (National Conference of State Legislatures [NCSL], 2019). Today, about 28 states in the U.S. have still retained the death penalty in addition to the U.S. National Government and the United States’ Military (NCSL, 2019). Even though various players have contributed immensely to the research on capital punishment, both for and against the imposition of capital punishment, this research is based on the premise that capital punishment should not exist because it has led to the execution of innocent people in the past, serves no deterrent purpose, and violates a person’s right to life.
