Keep Your Head Up
A white kid was walking the down the streets of Manhattan trying to locate a house he had seen in a photo hidden in the well-manicured laundry of his mother. He kept walking and glaring at the empty faces that he met, which at no time cared to check his different, grotesque picture of the homo sapiens that they might have seen once or twice in UNICEF’s advertisement begging money to take to Africa’s starving kids. Yes, this was America, yet he looked like the gutter kid in Mexican soaps. A look at him would send birds scampering and flapping away since he was scary; he was utterly ‘unmanhattan’. One thing was sure, he was in no world of his own and it would soon be night, a fact that made him swallow hard after remembering the last substantial meal he took was almost twenty-four hours past. Here, children had etiquette and would not at all walk while eating unlike where he came from where he would meet a kid eating away their cake and would be given some even without borrowing. Those that he saw eating were nibbling at some whitish thing called ice cream, and he wondered...
At the moment, he had been walking for hours, his legs were almost sore and no alley gave him hope of finding the house in the pictures. He knew he needed to locate the house, and he kept searching. If he never found the house, he would still have to relish the smooth cane that his mother kept, just in case he misbehaved. Knowing that he had stolen some cash to hike a ride to this God forsaken, unfriendly, uninhabitable yet so cute surrounding, he was dead sure that if he did not find the house he would have to get a street and spend the night. This way, his mother would be dead worried to beat him up, and since it was not cold at all, it wouldn’t hurt if he tried it. It was almost sundown and old men with clean white shorts could be seen wandering around being pulled along by huge dogs. He wondered why they would not just let go of the dogs, after all, in his area, some dogs loitered around, gave birth and nature sorted their issues. At his place of residence, there would be no need of leashes, in fact, dogs belonged to whoever came along them. "The government officials had tried to clean them but new ones would always emerge from God knows where " one day his mom had muted.
In his young age, he had grown to see his mother weep. Not once or twice had he seen her in the bedroom cry. But he was ten and some of the times he though she was praying like she always told him. One of these times he would have to find himself in a class where people actually cared about where people came from and his bubble would burst. At the moment, he was sure that most of his classmates never understood what he said when he told them that his father was in heaven and that one of this days one of them would try to question the rarity of his assertions. This kept giving him the gusto to look for his father, he knew he needed it, and it made him yearn for a person to call dad, like David, one of his friends always did.
He desired to be carried on a man’s shoulders. At least, he would feel like there was a father who loved him. He waited from the time he saw David having two parents. Then he had asked his mom and she told him that the father was in heaven, and he could not come to terms with what she mean, "He Died?”, he had asked, and the mother burst into tears.
To her, tears had become her only solace. She had only one consolation. She feared that one day she would run dry of tears and made sure to take lots of water every day. She remembered Marcus; a well-groomed man who always wore an awesome fragrance around himself. He was sure of himself. Confident to the core, and just like a gushing wind swept her off her feet. She relished the eventuality of life with him, at no time would she withdraw anything from him. She adored him. She practically worshiped him. As thoughts crossed her mind, she wo...
