Lula Ann, a blue- black-skinned girl, born from light-skinned parents, suffers rejection, lacks parental affection and tenderness and goes through a tough childhood. When she was born, as the author states, she was as black as tar that her mother was scared of her and embarrassed by her. Instead of the little girl calling her mother mummy or any other name to show etiquette, she calls her by her name Sweetness. Lula Ann was hidden most of the time (page, 1). Besides, she blames society and her child for her ruthless treatment.
Lula Ann goes through childhood trauma which leaves a scar in her heart.
