Abstract
The teaching and learning of writing skills continue to present significant challenges to teachers and students. These challenges are prominent even in countries with highly effective teaching and learning models. New Zealand is one of the nations with the most feasible, proactive, and effective educational systems. Compared to Saudi Arabia, its teaching framework continues to prove its efficiency in producing students with proficient writing skills. This study aims to assess the teaching and learning methods employed in New Zealand with a specific emphasis on language writing. These methods include shared writing, independent writing, and language experiences. Recommendations for Saudi Arabian teachers will also be provided based on this assessment.
Executive Summary
The method of instruction employed in Saudi Arabia for the teaching of writing is largely flawed. Teachers are not exposed to learning opportunities and workshops which makes it problematic for them to increase their knowledge and improve their skills. These individuals are in turn expected to impact students with the kind of knowledge that will assist them to develop into proficient writers. This becomes a challenge especially considering the fact that the entities entrusted with this responsibility are themselves products of a flawed system of learning. This study capitalizes on the methods of instruction implemented in New Zealand to make recommendations for the Saudi Arabian educational landscape. Key recommendations include the need for the implementation of such teaching approaches as guided writing, independent writing, and language experiences.
How to Extend our Talented Writers and Lift Up the Struggling Ones
Being skillful at writing is essential for the success of students in the classroom. Notably, writing is integral in the learners' everyday lives as they participate in the universe of social media, blogging, and texting. Students rarely develop into proficient writers in the school setting in the absence of effective teacher instruction. Quality teaching is suggested as the most critical point of influence on the learning outcomes of students. This has particularly been the case with New Zealand, where observers acknowledge the need for students in the country to develop effective writing skills even as they proceed from junior to middle school. The Ministry of Education recently released a report which asserts that presently in New Zealand, students' underachievement in writing is one of the primary challenges facing the country's education system (New Zealand Ministry of Education, 2012). The report details that 1 out of 4 students lack practical writing skills. This reflects the need for the identification of new strategies that can be employed to improve the quality of teacher instruction. Significant inconsistencies in learners' writing proficiencies have been observed in students between 5 and 8 years. Even with these inconsistencies, New Zealand's educational system is ranked among the topmost effective teaching and learning frameworks in the world. This is evidenced in the image below:
