Instructions:

I need you to write a two-paragraph named below (three). The final document should be 4-6 paragraphs (no more than 3 pages single-spaced) total. Please do the following for each synopsis, in 2-3 paragraphs: [it is not necessary to watch the film to answer these questions, you do not need to explain or understand the plot to create an analysis of the film based on gender. Try to dig in a bit more with the questions---probe for an opportunity to really engage with the ideas in the films and the readings. Explore Feminism Continues and the ways in which the burgeoning feminist movement as well as greater access for women to education informed a different way of thinking about the life possibilities for women, family structures, and gender norms. Also look at the impact of the Civil Rights movement and ideas about masculinity for Black Americans in the post WWII era. ● ● ● View films through a historical and critical lens and be able to at least begin the process of understanding and identifying how films reflect and/or inform gender norms at the time of production and/or of the period a film explores. Critically examine the ways in which race, class, gender and sexuality inform the experiences of men and women in American history and identify how films very often reflect and explore these “elements” of our social fabric. Understand some of the ideological, economic, political, social and cultural forces that shape the experiences of American women and gender norms.

Movie Synopsis
The Color Purple
The film 'The Color Purple' talks of the ordeals and few successes of a Black American teenager, Celie, raised in Georgia's rural parts. Celie later enlightens and resists the destructive self-concept which she is forced to acquire by other people. The film is centered on the theme of women and femininity. Most female characters in the movie are depicted as facing difficult choices, such as either submitting or opposing the attempts of male characters that oppress them. The film highlights the societal idea that women are thought to be a commodity of men and that only women capable of standing for their beliefs are the ones who are financially independent. An elaborate example is when Celie is married off as a mere commodity to Albert at the young age of 14.
Despite the theme of women and femininity, the film also highlights the themes of race and religion. Celie being an African American female living in a mostly white area before the civil rights movement sees nothing valuable in her race and herself (Boutan). During this period, there was increased racial segregation, and systemic racism against African-Americans was prominent. In the film, most Black women are depicted as victims of violent crimes by the superior White men. As a result, Cecile leans on her Christianity and God as her primary source of comfort. She regularly writes letters to God of the ordeals she faces.
