1. The Film’s Summary and Theme
“The Last Laugh” is a great film that was directed by F.W. Murnau that garnered extensive popularity as a silent film. The film is truly silent, which is evidenced by the dearth of printed intertitles. The storyline is narrated through an impeccable skill of camera language and pantomime. The narration is simply executed through facial expressions, moves, angles and visual cues that are easily readable. The lead performer in the outstanding film is Emil Jannings. However, the most remarkable thing about the film is the utilization of the moving camera. The film uses a moving view that captivates the views and enhances their comprehension of the storyline. The technical mastery that the director exudes adds piquancy to the film by making it exciting many times. The storyline that the director narrates in the film is a traditional narrative, where he follows the doorman on every step that he makes to cement the importance of being a doorman to the viewers. The plot summary provides a wealth of historical information that enables a viewer to understand the occurrences in Germany during the Weimar era. The film’s outset begins with the meeting of the Doorman, who is a robust fellow, embodying the World War 1 generation German-Prussian. The Doorman executes his responsibilities in assisting patrons at the hotel with their varied heavy luggage and subsequently takes long relaxing sessions to ease his back. Upon returning home, a dilapidated apartment, he is welcomed with deep admiration by lower-class inhabitants of the tenement. The Doorman asserts his authority as depicted in the scene where he stands up for the minor that is bullied, which defines him as an authority figure in his apartment residence. He goes to work the following morning only to find a demotion message and replaced by a younger person. Lifting luggage becomes his new job temporarily at the hotel, which renders him depressed, and resultantly he becomes a bathroom attendant. However, the events in the interesting film culminate in a joyous ending when an old rich man dies and leaves all his wealth to the Doorman. The Doorman goes to feast at the same hotel where he worked and received a demotion, where he shows kindness to the few people that appreciated him during the times of his incessant work tribulations.
