Stanza one and two of the poem are deceptive to the reader. They sound simple and cool like the writer is enjoying her situation. Whereas the writer depicts the anger she has against her father. In the beginning, the rhyme scheme lulls the reader into an aesthetic state and the language used sound free from any anger and dark imagery that will storm the poem as it progresses. As the poem grow, the simple nursery rhyme’s innocence is quickly erased with use of languages and images of the horrible war. There rhyme scheme and the form of the poem is therefore ironical to the real feeling of the narrator.
Plath’s usage of Nazi Germany metaphor was to bring out her father violence and compared him to the war tragedy. Nazi aimed at doing away with unwanted breed so that pure and perfect German remain. She called herself Jews because she was obsessed with Jews culture and history whereas in the real sense she was from Germany. She at times imagine herself being taken to a city in Jews land and start to talk and behave like Jews. The writer refers her father as a “panzer-man” and pointed how he looked and his “Luftwaffe” brutality.
