To Kill a Mocking Bird: Questions
Question 1
With this statement, Tom Robinson-a black man had just placed himself above the white man, contrary to what the people of Maycomb believed. The black people were perceived to be worthless; therefore saying that he felt sorry for her couldn’t have gotten well with the white people, judge Taylor included. This is the reason the writer states himself that “Mr. Gilmer seemed ready to rise to the ceiling” (Lee, p. 201). He had just realized that the statements could not have earned Tom favor in the eyes of the jury, which was predominantly composed of white people.
Question 2
Atticus closing comment speaks for itself. If the jury could only rise above racial prejudice, then there could have been just one a verdict-and that is the one to vindicate Tom from the rape allegations. The assumption of this jury was pegged on the fact that Tom was a black man; therefore, no single reason could justify the fact that he didn’t commit the offense (Lee, p. 208). In his comments, Atticus was condemning such actions.
Question 3
Despite the overwhelming proof given by attorney Atticus in Tom Robinson’s case, the jury convicts him because they couldn’t view him beyond his skin color. Indeed, the jury knew the truth, but they couldn’t have taken a Negro’s word over a decent white man’s word. In Atticus words, “A court is only as sound as its jury, and a jury is only as sound as the men who make it up" (Lee, p. 209). He says these words to try and convince the all-white jury to go against the generation of prejudice and grant Tom his freedom. Unfortunately, that failed to happen.
Question 4
In this case, Bob Ewell would be considered responsible for Tom Robinson’s death. He unjustly accuses Tom of raping his daughter and then subjects him to the inherent prejudice against the black people in a court of law. Tom is then taken to Enfield Prison Farm where he get’s devastated by the white man’s discrimination. Even after Atticus gives him hope of success with an appeal (Lee, p. 238); Tom get’s none of it and consequently decides to run away. According to the prison guards, they shot him in the process (Lee, p.239). All these are premised on the actions of his main antagonist, Bob Ewell.
Question 5
As Jem and Scout were walking home from a pageant at the school, it was getting dark. Just as they were passing under the Oak tr...
