The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Student’s Name Institution of Learning Course name Date The novel introduces Oscar as a sweet but disastrously ghetto nerd, from the New Jersey home, whose ever dream had been to become the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and find love. Unfortunately, Oscar may never reach his dreams. There seems to be a very strong protagonist always standing in the way for most of the characters in the novel. Fuku is the real protagonist of the novel, who barred the success of various characters, among them Oscar and his entire family. Fuku is an ancient curse that all along haunted Oscar’s family for generations, all their way from Santo Domingo to Washington Heights in the United States of America to the New Jersey's Bergenline and back (Diaz, 2007). Diaz (2007) introduced Oscar de Leon as having come from a Dominican family, hence expected to be more successful with girls. On the contrary, Oscar gets more successful with cartoons, reading, games and science fiction. All through his childhood, he does not find love. When he finally finds a girl to love, the Fuku makes him leave Olga for Maritza, who soon dumped him. In high school, much involved in reading, Oscar had less time for love though his friends quickly found girlfriends.
