The day the universe changed
Throughout history, decision-making has proven to be the most affected by various factors. Our social and ethical values hinder us from making certain decisions. Burke tries to give an exploration of life in the book The Day the Universe Changed. . He gives a view of life and the universe from the ancient generations in an attempt to make us visualize and appreciate where we have come from. In this paper, I would love to review and give my opinion on the Theologians as well as Churchmen. Burke tries to justify the theologians in history by the circumstances, which forced them to make certain drastic decisions (Burke, 2003).
The Church is believed to have gotten its roots from Greek. Consequently, the transformation of the universe traces its roots to the same place. Greek plays a major role in the society we live in today. There was a distinct rationale in the former Greek that up to date affects decision-making in a number of institutions including the church. Several transformations have been faced with challenges that were inherited from Greek in those long gone centuries. For example, it was a conservative institution that allowed for no alterations whatsoever in anything. However, they accepted knowledge, which is subject to change. More theories and practices have come up since then but will they be effectively carried out in the conservative state (Burke, 2010).
There was a conference in a church, which was held in Italy where several transformations took place. During the summit, the church leaders tried to find solutions regarding a couple of issues. They were interested in giving detailed information concerning the source of the universe. Their arguments were based on myths without concrete evidence. These were based on what the Greeks had told them earlier. The Catholic Church was held up because their defense only had myths. Most of them were accused of heresies. They had to face the judgment which was a death sentence implemented by fire. I believe that it was essential for them to have had a Bible like the case in the modern church to have effectively fought for their knowledge (Burke, 2012).
Theologians in history lacked a calendar, which would help them in guiding their worship events. This is because different theologians and churchmen had varying ideas of when to worship and the day suitable for worship. The Egyptians helped to solve this issue because they created a calendar by their knowledge of astronomy. This changed the opinion of the churchmen and theologians on education. As a result, they slowly began to accept the positive impacts of education and their perspective of the universe and its origin (Burke, 2003).
The Buddhists also had their own ideas, which differed from the ideologies of the Catholic theologians and churchmen. Siddhartha for example, allowed himself to enter asceticism where he came out with the revelation that our lived are a result of fate. However, he believed in Brahma as the creator and thus the source of the universe. Buddhists had no problem accepting education and its effects. Nonetheless, the church could not accept all ideas from the philosophers who influenced their beliefs (Burke, 2010).
Socrates believed in the power of individual decision-making. As a Greek philosopher, he encouraged the people to always consider whatever decision they made. He insisted on moral values as well as ethical ones to be the foundation of their decisions. For this, the church sentenced him to death in the name of being an enemy of the state because he could not stand by the law of the church.
In the medieval period, there was a positive change. Constantine who was tired of the religious conflicts summoned the theologians and churchmen to a meetin...
