THE FALL OF THE SOVIET UNION DURING THE COLD WAR
The Soviet Union was formed as a superpower to rival the United States in the 19th Century after the collapse of a Russian government. The Soviet Union saw a moment of revolution in the 19th Century Russian government that soon saw it shredded at the beginning of the 20th Century. The Soviet Union fell apart owing to a combination of political and economic shortcomings.
A drop in the prices of oil saw a rampant fall of the Soviet Union as the weak economy could hardly sustain the big nation. At the time, Mikhail Gorbachev ruled the Soviet Union. His Union was characterized by internal wrangles that saw the statesmen despising the leader because he disregarded the interests of people in a bid to please international bodies. Mikhail Gorbachev aspired to introduce the Glasnost and Perestroika systems which aimed at improvising the communist regime of governance (McCauley, 2014). However, the people despised this rapid change as they opted for a new method of management.
