The Need for Recycling Programs in Our Communities
Environmental degradation and pollution have become an urgent concern globally due to the planetary hazards emanating from the practice. Human activities and industrialization are the leading contributors to the environmental problems we currently face, and their impacts are usually long-term (Letcher, 2020). In the quest for comfort, easy alternatives to doing things, and convenient and cost-effective solutions, human beings are continually engaging in destructive practices that are causing more harm to the world than good. The main question is how to conserve our environment through our practices properly and what progressive policies and intervention measures should we employ to manage the ever-pilling wastes and reduce environmental pollution.
Human wastes are one of the leading environmental pollutants in the modern age. There is excessive deposition of environmental-hazardous wastes in our water basins that threaten marine life and contaminate our waters. Dumping of trash in landfills also destroys our environments by releasing methane gas from the rotting wastes (Letcher, 2020). Such gases largely contribute to global warming when they are released into the atmosphere. Burning of rubbish is also hazardous as it leads to air pollution by releasing harmful toxins into the air. Gases from incinerators contribute to acid rain, which is detrimental to plants, animals, and human consumption. However, a conservative solution involves the proper handling of our wastes, which is less harmful to the environment and the various species therein. Recycling of human garbage is an environmental-friendly solution that reduces human junk's burden and provides protection for future generations (Worrell & Markus, 2014).
The impacts of recycling solve both the short-term and long-term environmental issues, which, in the end, result in a cleaner and healthier world to exist. The act of waste recycling refers to collecting non-biodegradable wastes that are considered trash and processing them to convert them into new usable products (Jөrgensen, 2019). Recycling has tremendous benefits to the environment, and it helps save on resources that would have been used in creating new products. By reducing the amounts of trash ending up in landfills and other parts of our environment, this conservative process reduces air and water pollution, resulting in a cleaner environment to live in.
The human population is ever-increasing, which means that the world is in constant danger of waste pollution from human activities. Having effective recycling programs to handle the ever-increasing human waste in the environment will help secure the survivability of humankind on Earth (Jөrgensen, 2019). A united front in conserving our environment and the planet leads to more united communities as the process fosters healthier neighbourhoods. Overall, achieving progress in cleaning our ecosystem of all hazardous wastes requires the participation of all stakeholders concerned with environmental matters since one individual or few sectors cannot attain success. Governments need to come together and develop global policies that promote more recycling of waste products to foster environmental-conservation success on a worldwide scale.
There are three main ways of carrying out recycling: primary, secondary, and tertiary recycling (Jөrgensen, 2019). Primary recycling also referred to as closed-loop recycling, involves converting an item into more of the same product. For instance, soda cans can be turned into more soda cans instead of throwing them away, or paper can be re-used for its same purpose. Secondary recycling involves converting an item into other different products but using the same material, such as recycling tires to produce other products made of rubber. Finally, tertiary or chemical recycling involves breaking down materials in a chemical process to develop entirely different products.
