A physician assistant, commonly referred to as PAs, work with other medical practitioners as a team to provide care to patients. The profession was started in the mid-1960s by Dr Eugene Stead as a way to address the shortage of primary care physicians in the American health care system. PAs perform similar roles to those of a classic physician with the only difference being PAs can only practice medicine under supervision or while working in teams with other health care practitioners. While providing direct care to patients, the roles of a PA range from conducting a physical exam to assisting in surgeries to developing treatment plans. This paper describes the roles of a physician assistant in the health care system.
