Self-Preservation in Lord of the Flies
Evil tends to appear intrinsic to humankind and no matter how far civilized we become, we always find ourselves in the disposal of evil.Mr. Golding termed evils as inherent to humans and a part of their beings. Well, as much as people can go in denying it, it remains that people are in and out evil. In the book, The Lord of Flies, time gain the idea of self-preservation crops up. However, in a far much explicit depiction, I tend to think that evil has a personified nature. It becomes part of an individual and gets customized to them. Here in the book, as the boys get stuck on that Island, they have to find a way in which they can survive. The novel revolves around self-preservation and many features, symbols and objects that regard it come out openly (Golding, 1983).
In the Island, people have to make the ends meet. Piggy, being one intelligent guy and also the one that most of the boys pick on, has glasses that they use to light a fire once they find themselves stranded on the Island. Jacks, hunters end up raiding the camp stealing the glasses. The idea of self-preservation comes up clearly here (Olsen, 2000).
While Jack’s hunters can now benefit, the members of Ralph’s camp cannot merely because on of them found it worthy to steal from them their source of livelihood. In this instance, we experience people who would rather have their counterparts suffer while they benefit despite the fact that what they use to advantage belonged to the others. In another act of self-preservation from the Jack’s camp, a fire is lit to flush the Ralph’s camp out; in the ensuing guise of savagery and enmity as each group tries to be in control of the few resources on the Island. Well, this fire leads to the saving of the people as a ship stops due to the fire. Still, the scuffle to escape from the Island to the ship gives the same impression of self-preservation.
The beast in the novel is a mere imagination of the boys. In an act of preservation, even before they could get a clear picture of whom the beast was, they beat up Simon and kill him. Just how can a friend all of a sudden become a beast. Well, since the beast was in the imaginary, they end up realizing that latter after killing Simon, just because they want to be safe, regardless of whether he was a beast or not. Even as the idea of the beast continues savoring their minds, they end up offering sacrifices to it. Well, while others might view it as an act of being even more savage and going further away from civilization, I think it is a way of being free from the imaginary beast: a way to self-preserve from their minds, and their idea of the beast. This way, they would preserve themselves even from their thoughts.
The Lord of the Flies, which is the sow’s head impaled on the stake as offering to the beast stands as a way of invoking the inescapable nature in human. While it depicts the human nature within, it reminds the people nature of the evil within. In a way, it works as a reminder of how certain the idea of never escaping no matter the stunts they pull to self-preserve. It is symbolic of the evil evoking the beast within all the characters, and still, the humans in the social realm (Olsen, 2000). While Simon and Ralph depict a sort of goodness, Roger and Jack depict a lot of blood thirst and need to survive despite other people failing. While Simon has to die in the hands of Roger and Jack, Ralph is left alone to restore order. To roll of the blame, Roger goes ahead and tries to murder Piggy by pushing a boulder towards him crushing the conch shell in the process. T...
