Power in foreign policies refers to the ability of one nation to influence another in taking specific actions to achieve a particular result. It is derived from the resources and the capabilities of a particular group of people (Bradley, 2019). The individuals have to stick together as a group for them to exercise power since an individual cannot own it. For many years, different countries have used their capabilities and made other countries to behave in a particular way for their benefit (Chong, 2015). Some states are usually more powerful than others, and hence, policies on interaction are developed to maintain a healthy relationship between the different countries. The three main types of power used worldwide include hard, soft, and smart power.
Hard power
In this type of power, the governing bodies in various countries use the military and the economy to manipulate actors into doing what they want. Certain possessions present in a particular nation such as the physical resources, people, army, size of the territory, among other things are utilized in influencing other groups (Ilgen, 2016). The factors are also used to determine the strength of the group and its capability to control different regions. The method of power has been used for long periods, and it is most suitable for countries with strong armies and good economies in the world. The strength of the nation is determined by the kind of resources a country has whereby the more the resources, the stronger it is and vice versa.
